  • What is a licence to operate?

Every organisation - commercial, political, charitable - has a licence to operate, the permission given by society so it can carry on doing what it wants to do. That permission depends on whether the organisation's relationships are good or bad. And those relationships depend, among other things, on trust. This quick overview explains why you need to keep that licence to operate and how public relations can help.

The Government has issued exploration licences for seabed mining just off the majority of the North Island's west coast. Companies are about to apply for licences to mine. If this goes ahead, millions of tonnes of black sand will be dug up, destroying the seabed ecology, threatening the endangered maui's dolphin, surf breaks and causing coastal erosion. Some 280 million cubic meters of sand have been extracted in nearby waters over the past three decades. That's six times the size of Namsan Mountain. [Soundbite] Choi Jung-ki(Professor Emeritus, Inha University) : "Sand keeps moving into the numerous pits in the ocean floor to level it out. That is why they are becoming lower." Permits for sand mining are to expire at the end of this year. But the government of Ongjin-gun County is considering issuing more permits for next year in order to secure funds. Environmental groups are demanding that sand extraction be suspended to prevent sandbars from disappearing within the next 20 years.

Dirty jobs that pay shockingly well! These careers might be considered dirty or disgusting by some but they have high salaries. From a doctor doing important but nasty jobs to getting down and dirty with complete and utter filth, today we look at the top ten dirtiest job that pay surprisingly well! 10 - Garbage Collector With the many nasty things that us humans throw away, we don’t plan on or ever want to come into contact with it again. That’s exactly why we threw it away. 9 - Proctologist I think we can all agree that we don’t particularly like to talk about our problems that arise down under. It can be quite hard to explain that you are having frequent gas or abnormal stool without feeling a little uncomfortable. (Standardized Patient Program examining the abdomen Photo by Steve Perrin) 8 - Oil Riggers Along with danger, oil riggers face very unclean working conditions. Many oil companies pay loads of money for people to discover and drill for oil. For how much oil is worth, it is sometimes called “black gold.” 7 - Portable Toilet Cleaner What could be grosser than using a portable toilet? Cleaning one. Somebody has to do this disgusting job and boy do I feel sorry for them. By using a tank and vacuum wand, portable toilet cleaners suck up all of the waste left in a portable toilet. 6 - Crab Fisherman Crab fisherman get down and dirty while fishing for crabs. This isn’t the simple kind of fishing where you can just cast out your fishing pole line and reel in one fish. Crab fisherman use large nets to catch hundreds of crabs at a time. Along with the nasty aroma, they experience deadly conditions every day as they battle some of the harshest weather out on the sea. In fact fishing is the most dangerous job in the U.S. with the most fatalities of any profession. 5 - Sewer Inspector No not these guys who sort of look like they might be amatuer sewer inspectors, but who are actually just digging for geoduck clams in Washington. But these guys. Being a sewer inspector is definitely one of the dirtiest jobs out there. From the nasty smells to the disgusting waste surrounding them, I don’t know how they do it. They maintain the clean water we drink and keep our streets clean. (Photos by Erik Mauer and Matt Brown) 4 - Embalmer There’s just something about the word embalming that sends chills down my spine. Although I find it extremely creepy, there are actually embalmers worldwide that do the job that many wouldn’t dare do. 3 - Coal Miner Coal mining is a job that is going to send you home caked in filth every single day. This is definitely one of the dirtiest and most dangerous jobs a person can do. In the United States, over 100,000 coal miners died in the twentieth century. Coal miners spend many hours underground in long tunnels that don’t offer much light, oxygen or cleanliness. It’s estimated that there is 275 billion tons of coal remaining to be mined in the US which roughly translates to a 250 year supply. So it would seem their jobs are secure, although hopefully renewable energy becomes mainstream before all that coal gets mined. 2 - Plumber When we think of a plumber, most of us think of the butt-crack-showing, uneducated guy. But plumbing usually requires a 4 to 5 year apprenticeship and then passing an exam to obtain a license. 1 - Crime Scene Cleaner Finally to number one on our list! Most people often forget when watching a crime scene show or dreadfully coming across one in real life, that someone actually has to clean up that horrific mess. Think of all the grim components that can make up a crime scene. Blood and bodily fluids are just two of many. It’s known as Crime scene clean up or Crime and Trauma Scene Decontamination aka CTS Decon. In the state of California, they are known as Trauma Scene Waste Management Practitioners. They do the job of a regular cleaning crew on steroids. In need of a HAZMAT suit, these cleaners wipe away some of the most gruesome scenes in history.

Frank Vanclay from the University of Groningen talks about a social licence to operate in the Arctic Ocean at the 2015 MARE Policy Day. During the MARE Policy Day 2015 national and international stakeholders from governments, business and civil society discussed the concept of a Social License to Operate for four key-sectors operating in the Arctic: oil & gas, fisheries, tourism and shipping. The role of national and international law, joint industry guidelines, indigenous peoples and environmental aspects in developing a Social License to Operate was explored by keynote lectures as well as in a workshop setting in which the Social License to Operate was defined for each sector.

Listen to Jerry Danni, Senior Vice-President of Sustainability, Goldcorp Inc., talk about the critical importance for mining of a social license to operate – and about why the Mining and Communities Conference will have tremendous value. http://www.mining.solutions/miningandcommunities/ And get a preview of the venue, too – the UBC campus in the beautiful city of Vancouver! Jerry is excited to be chairing this conference, because social license to operate is critically important to the mining industry. To achieve this, trust and transparency are key for Gerry. And he emphasises that those in the mining industry need to take the time to really listen to communities, so as to be able to work collaboratively and ensure mutual benefits for the mining company and the community. Jerry believes that working with communities is now fundamental to everybody in the mining industry, not just CSR experts – so he encourages everyone in the mining industry to attend the Mining and Communities Conference. Join Goldcorp’s Jerry Danni at the Mining and Communities 2016 conference in Vancouver in June. The conference will explore how we can more effectively establish and maintain our social license to operate; and how building partnerships between mining companies and communities creates shared value in the form of long-term social benefits.

The Bloop In 1997, an extremely loud, ultra-low frequency sound now known as “The Bloop” was picked up by some underwater listening stations. Normally this wouldn't be all that bizarre, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, picks up underwater sounds all the time. After all, that IS the PURPOSE of having underwater listening stations. However, what makes this noise so mysterious is the fact that it was heard at different listening stations over 3000 miles apart. Many began speculating it belonged to a massive, unknown, deep-sea creature; maybe even Cthulhu! The loudest animal of all time is the blue whale, but analysts were quick to rule out blue whales as the culprit. This sound was much, much louder. “The Bloop” gets its name from how the audio sounded after the researchers sped the recording up by a factor of 16, to increase the intelligibility of the audio. When listened to at the actual speed, it is a much longer, droning noise. Officially, the NOAA has stated that they believe the sound came from a phenomenon called “icequakes.” The resulting sounds are that of sea ice cracking and melting. However, SINCE the Bloop, no oceanic sound that loud has been recorded and no one knows for sure what caused it. Could it really be just glacier sounds? 7. The Ping Up next on our list is another strange noise emanating from the ocean. However, this one is referred to as more of a “ping.” This pinging noise was discovered roughly 75 miles northwest of the Inuit hamlet known as Igloolik in the Canadian arctic. The sound appears to be originating from the bottom of the sea floor, and it appears to be frightening the wildlife away. That area of the arctic was teeming with sea mammals in the past, but now seems to be relatively empty. Boaters say they can hear the noise easily while passing through the area, and apparently the pinging can be heard through the hulls of ships. Others have also heard it from land. Members of the legislative assembly Paul Quassa and George Qulaut noticed the lack of wildlife in the area over the past year, and have their own concerns and suspicions about the origins of the noise. Some believe it could be the vibrations of mining, blasting, or construction, but Quassa claims no permits for that type of work have been granted in the area. Others believe that members of the Greenpeace environmental organization have artificially generated the sound to move the wildlife away from the hunting grounds, but there is no proof of this so far. Currently, Canada’s Department of National Defence is aware of the noise and is investigating it further. 6. Taos Hum In the arid landscapes of northern central New Mexico, there exists a community that is home to a bizarre noise known as the “Taos Hum,” named after the town in which it resides. It seems that only a small percentage of people can actually hear the Taos Hum, but the noise is so persistent that it can become very irritating and agonizing. It’s been described as a seemingly endless, very low frequency humming noise; just imagine the sort of sound a dog whistle makes. Most of the Hum hearers are typically between 30 and 50 years old, and allegedly the sound is heard the most between 8 and 9 pm. They typically perceive the sound at least once per week and there are reports of the Taos Hum being heard as far as 50 miles from the town. Those who can actually hear and have tried to analyze the noise state that it is a modulated tone near 41 Hertz. However, more technical experts state it actually fluctuates from 30 to 80 Hertz. Geological, electromagnetic, and acoustic tests (among many others) have been done in the area to analyze the sound. There has been speculation of all sorts of causes for the noise since it was first identified in Taos in the early 90’s. Explanations range from psychological to supernatural, or even aliens and UFO's. However, no one has been able to pinpoint a source.

What is MARINE GEOLOGY? What does MARINE GEOLOGY mean? MARINE GEOLOGY meaning - MARINE GEOLOGY definition - MARINE GEOLOGY explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Marine geology or geological oceanography is the study of the history and structure of the ocean floor. It involves geophysical, geochemical, sedimentological and paleontological investigations of the ocean floor and coastal zone. Marine geology has strong ties to physical oceanography. Marine geological studies were of extreme importance in providing the critical evidence for sea floor spreading and plate tectonics in the years following World War II. The deep ocean floor is the last essentially unexplored frontier and detailed mapping in support of both military (submarine) objectives and economic (petroleum and metal mining) objectives drives the research. The Ring of Fire around the Pacific Ocean with its attendant intense volcanism and seismic activity poses a major threat for disastrous earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions. Any early warning systems for these disastrous events will require a more detailed understanding of marine geology of coastal and island arc environments. The study of littoral and deep sea sedimentation and the precipitation and dissolution rates of calcium carbonate in various marine environments has important implications for global climate change. The discovery and continued study of mid-ocean rift zone volcanism and hydrothermal vents, first in the Red Sea and later along the East Pacific Rise and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge systems were and continue to be important areas of marine geological research. The extremophile organisms discovered living within and adjacent to those hydrothermal systems have had a pronounced impact on our understanding of life on Earth and potentially the origin of life within such an environment. Oceanic trenches are hemispheric-scale long but narrow topographic depressions of the sea floor. They also are the deepest parts of the ocean floor. The Mariana Trench (or Marianas Trench) is the deepest known submarine trench, and the deepest location in the Earth's crust itself. A subduction zone where the Pacific Plate is being subducted under the Philippine Sea Plate. The bottom of the trench is further below sea level than Mount Everest is above sea level.

ABANDONED OLD SULFUR MINE-part1 - vlog43 hello my name is tony_0043 ___________________________ The ruins of Paliorema Sulfur Mine on the Greek island of Milos are remnants of an important period of industrial history. While visiting last year, the remote location of the ruins eluded me and I eventually gave up. This year however, it’s one of my main determined destinations. Abandoned by 1958, today the buildings are in a rather desolate state with most roofs missing, thus exposing the machinery, which largely remained in place, to the elements. Video in two parts Second part can be seen here https://vimeo.com/songularity/the-waning-sea Marine vertebrate populations declined 49 % between 1970 and 2012. Populations of fish species utilized by humans have fallen by half, with some of the most important species experiencing even greater declines. Around one in four species of sharks, rays and skates is now threatened with extinction, due primarily to overfishing. 29 % of marine fisheries are overfished. Tropical reefs have lost more than half their reef-building corals over the last 30 years. Worldwide, nearly 20% of mangrove cover was lost between 1980 and 2005. If current rates of temperature rise continue, the ocean will become too warm for coral reefs by 2050. Seabed mining licences cover 1.2 million square kilometres of ocean floor. More than 5 trillion plastic pieces weighing over 250,000 tonnes are in the sea. Oxygen-depleted dead zones are growing as a result of nutrient run-off. Children of Piha and Karekare talk about the threat of seabed mining off their beach. All for no maximum 5% revenue for NZ, and foreign-owned companies. It's not too late to stop this. Say no. http://www.kasm.org.nz Many thanks to our suppliers: Gavin & Matt @ Rocket Rentals, Jerry Roelants, Dennis Thompson @ the Dolly Shop, Brian Harris and Fergus Milner as well as our great volunteer crew and the fabulous children of Piha.
